Living with a voracious reader, I know that I can never go wrong with books as gifts – but sometimes keeping up with the cost of new kids’ books is a struggle.
Thank goodness for The Works, which is the UK’s favourite retailer of discount books, stationery, crafts and calendars. It’s essential for all those last-minute present needs! I’ve been gifted £50 to spend at The Works this Christmas and I’ve picked out some great gift ideas for young readers from the huge selection available online and in-store. Best of all, almost all the titles are discounted, meaning you’ll get a great deal!
At the moment Flea is crazy for all things supernatural and super hero. It’s a passion I’m keen to encourage – focusing on fantasy and sci-fi means Flea can read older books without the content being too “adult” – and there are also bags of positive, strong female characters to be inspired by in the fantasy world!
On her Christmas list to Father Christmas was anything Harry Potter, Flash, Batman or superhero-inspired – so I set about looking for some books that would appeal to her love of adventure and new worlds.
My first find was this fab guide book to the world of Demi Gods found in the Percy Jackson books – a total steal at just £4.99!
There’s also £2 off these fab Percy Jackson graphic novels, perfect for avid and reluctant readers – Flea adores graphic novels, and has spent most of the last year working through Marvel’s graphic novels, and various Neil Gaiman titles. The Works also stocks Percy Jackson novels, for between £1 and £2 off RRP, so if your youngster is new to Rick Riordan, then it’s the perfect opportunity to stock up.
Christmas is also a chance to introduce kids to new authors and worlds, and if your child is a fan of adventure, then I know Flea really enjoys the Alex Rider series, which is great for adventure fans – this complete Alex Rider set is an incredible £10.99 for all ten books – incredible value!
It wouldn’t be Christmas without an annual under the tree, of course – and The Works has a huge selection to choose from, starting at just £2 My pick for Flea is the Ripley’s Believe it or Not annual, packed with enough weird facts and stories to keep even the most giddy child quiet for an hour on Christmas morning!
With just under £10 of my £50 budget left, I decided to splash out on this guitar guide for youngsters – this Christmas, Flea has asked for a new guitar from Father Christmas and this book is pitched perfectly at young beginners wanting to play their first chords.
I hope my book picks have inspired you to get some great reads for your own young readers this Christmas – let me know what books you’re loving this festive season!
