So Fast.

It’s only taken three years, because I am a technical guru *cough* but this week I finally managed to find a bit of software that meant my Sony HDD camcorder could talk to a Mac computer. The MPG files on my camcorder are only made for PCs, you see. (for anyone with the same problem, what you need is the extremely nifty Wondershare).

This meant for the first time in ages, I was able to see video footage taken of Flea back in the early days – her first birthday, first Christmas, first trip overseas. There are bath-times and trips to the park, and family gatherings. And I managed to move across my old photo archive, too. Looking through shows me how much fun we’ve had. The places we’ve been and the laughs we shared.

I’m just not sure I remember any of it.

I’m not sure if it makes me a terrible person but honestly? I looked at the footage of Flea as a baby and toddler and thought to myself, “I just can’t remember her being that small.”ย

Obviously I know it happened. And thanks to this blog, lots of those memories are preserved, for both of us. But I think I was so caught up in the day to day of it, for a long time, that I didn’t really absorb any of it. Certainly not at the time.

Maybe it happens to all parents – certainly people on Twitter said they had similar experiences. But it brought home to me, really, how FAST it all goes.

Two minutes ago I was pregnant.ย And now she’s almost seven. How does that happen?

I put together a slideshow to remind myself just how fast it goes. Because I think I need to remember – every day – to pay attention, before the moment’s gone.

I also can’t remember exactly what she felt like when DD was a baby. I love your slide show – I want to do one now. Should I do it on the powerpoint in my laptop (which I’ve never used before) or should I use something else? I’m not asking for a full explanation here but if you could just point me in the direction of a programme I’ll go and work it out. Thanks.

This slideshow was just made in iMovie. But you can do something similar on Windows Movie Maker or Avid.

PS – How do you put one of those together? Is it feasible for a tech PR to manage to do it too? LOL.

      • 21st June 2012 / 8:04 pm

Arf. It’s just in iMovie, not too hard to do.

I just wrote about this – it’s come up with it as my link below! How my husband and W are not noticing how quickly their time together is passing, that W will go to school very soon and my husband (Lovely Bloke) will be lost without his partner in crime. It’s important to video, blog and take as many photos as possible because time is going all too quickly, isn’t it ๐Ÿ™

Yes, the memories seem unimportant at the time and yet later on, it’s hard to think of not having them.

Ah that’s amazing. Clearly pretty good with technology.. so sorry to be dim, but did you use the Wondershare kit to make the slide show? I love it and you’ve inspired me to transfer our 6 years of footage (when I get a minute!)
Flea is a v pretty girl and that Boden doggy top was a firm favourite in this house too! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • 21st June 2012 / 8:06 pm

No – Wondershare converts movies into other formats, including changing the Sony .mpg movie files into MPEG-4 (which iMovie can read). The slideshow was then made in iMovie.

And yes, Flea loved her Boden dog t-shirt!

Thanks – I’m rubbish at spotting a resemblance but it’s nice to know she’s definitely mine!

Awwww this is just lovely! I was thinking this not long ago how quickly life goes by with ny children and how I just can’t remember my 10 year old as a baby, and the 5 year old as a baby too seems such a long time ago. I keep saying to myself I am going to take more of an effort to enjoy the present and make the very most of them before they grow old and leave the nest. I think I may have to do a little movie like this too, shall link back if I ever get the time to actually do it ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks for sharing your lovely memories.

I also sometimes wonder where has the time gone. My son is 6 and going to school. We must enjoy every minute because soon it will be only a memory…

What a beautiful video, and what a beautiful little girl you have too. We were at a family party yesterday at a house we last went to 6 years ago when my eldest son was 13 months and I was expecting our second. Standing in the garden it felt like that first party had only been a few months before, but here were all the cousins 6 years on and all grown up – very scary how fast it has passed by.

I did the same things at Christmas and I’m so pleased that I have all of those videos because I’d forgotten it all too. Those cute things they said and the full on mega strops that you filmed. Pure class.
